Velvet beans are mainly grown in countries, like India, Unites States, West Indies and Africa. Grown on a climbing shrub with long vines and flowers, the beans in the velvet, hairy pods are used in Indian Ayurvedic medicine. Itchiness is caused on contact with immature foliage and seed pods. The velvet beans can be cooked for consumption. Before cooking, it is necessary to soak the beans in water for at least half an hour. As these beans could be toxic, it is important to change the water several times at the time of cooking. Also called cowhage, velvet beans can helps in the treatment of so many diseases, like diabetes, nervous disorders, arthritis and Parkinson’s disease.
